Our One Day travel program takes you to the unexplored Southern Highlands of Costa Rica where you will learn about the nature and traditions of this wonderful land, the birthplace
of the 1948 revolution.
The personal favorite of Down to Earth's president Matias Zeledon, this area has been long ignored by the mainstream travel operators.
Departures: we have daily departures with a minimum of 2 passengers and a maximum of sixteen. In order to insure that you are fully rested for this tour, we have set
up a confortable 9:30 am pick up at the major hotels in the Central Valley. A fully bilingual naturalist guide will accompany you every moment of your tour.
Description: the tour starts with a visit to the City of Cartago where we will see the ruins of the Church from the 1910 earthquake and the Los Angeles Basilica, home
of the largest pilgrimage in Central America. As an average, 1.5 million people walk every year to the Basilica on the eve of August 2nd for an outdoor morning mass.
We then take the Interamerican Highway to the Dota/Tarrazu region. Stopping along the way for breaththaking scenery and historical sites, you will visit Las Ventoleras, site of the cruelest battle in Costa Rica's 1948 revolution.
Once we arrive in Santa Maria, you will witness wall to wall coffeee. But before we start the Coffee Experience, you will see the monument that conmemorates the beginning of the revolution that changed Costa Rica's political life for the
better.
We then drive 5 minutes to the farm of Santos Cordoba for a tasty, home-hosted lunch cooked on the woodburning stove.
After lunch we will start the Down to Earth coffee experience, which, in two hours, will teach you the ins and outs of this wonderful beverage. Click here to see pictures.
After the Coffee Experience, we will drive out of the Dota/Tarrazu region via the old road through the town of Copey and visit its century old church, a national landmark.
A leisurely drive through beautiful highland forests and quaint farmland will return you to your hotel in the Central Valley by 6 pm.
