Introduction: this program has been designed for the birder interested in Shore & Water birds. Scheduled for the months of September, October
and November of 2006, these itineraries will take you to the four most important regions of Costa Rica to see Shore & Water birds.
9 night / 10 day itinerary - US$1,437 per person
Day 1: arrival to Costa Rica, check in at hotel Bougainvillea in the northeastern edge of the Central Valley. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. We
gather after dinner for a 45 minute introduction to the program by your expert birdwatching guide.
Day 2: After an optional 5 am call for bird watching in the gardens of our hotel, we have breakfast and enjoy an audiovisual presentation by Richard Garrigues
on water birds and their present travel patterns. We depart right after breakfast to board our boat to the Tortuguero Canals. In the late afternoon we will take a private boat for your first private encounter with water birds.
Day 3: We meet for a 5:00 call at the gardens of our lodge and then board out private boat for a tour of the canals and the national park. We will enjoy
lunch at the lodge and then board our boat again in the afternoon.
Day 4: We depart Tortuguero after breakfast and head towards the Arenal region. We check in our hotel.
Day 5: We leave early in the morning for our visit to Caño Negro. Private boat transportation and a great lunch await for us at the dock. In the
late afternoon, back in our hotel, we will enjoy more birding.
Day 6: We depart early in the morning for a two night stay at the Organization for Tropical Studies Palo Verde station. That afternoon we walk the marshes,
in-water observation deck and special trails at the station. Please book early, there is only 5 rooms with private bathroom in this lodge.
Day 7: Very early in the morning we are picked up by a private boat for a 3.5 hour birdwatching private ride to Isla de Pajaros. Back at the station we
enjoy lunch and then relax before we board the boat again in the afternoon. That evening we enjoy a presentation by the station expert staff on their current research projects.
Day 8: We depart in the morning for a drive to our Central Pacific hotel where we will arrive in the late afternoon.
Day 9: Early in the morning we drive to nearby Tarcoles for an outstanding boat ride along the canals. We enjoy a fresh fruit breakfast on the dock. Back
at the hotel we enjoy a full lunch and depart right after a siesta. We will reach our central valley hotel in the early evening for a late check out and farewell dinner.
Day 10: departure to catch all flights home.
Price per person in double occupancy: US$1,437 based on a 8-passenger group.
Single supplement is $527 and triple occupancy is also available.
Please book early, the Palo Verde Research Station only has 5 rooms with private bathroom and even though they all are assigned to us, they will not be enough for everybody if the group goes over 10 passengers..
Price includes all taxes, transportation, lodging, meals and activities mentioned, from arrival to departure. Full vegetarian menu available in every hotel we visit. PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE airline travel to Costa
Rica or departure airport tax
A US$100 NON-refundable booking fee is required at the time of making the reservation. This fee is applied towards the final price of the tour.
If more than 8 passengers book your trip, your US$1437 price will be reduced accordingly, down to US$1,207 per person when we book 16 passengers, our maximum number per trip. You must book the trip and pay the initial booking
fee in order to receive passenger counts and final price information.
