Introduction: this program has been designed for the Birdwatcher who has done various general tours and now wants an itinerary directed to specifics.
This trip is great for the beginner and the advanced Bird Watcher. Our timing is perfect to see the migrating Hawks in the South Caribbean.
9 night / 10 day itinerary -- US$1,576 pp
Day 1: arrival to Costa Rica, check in at hotel Bougainvillea in the northeastern edge of the Central Valley. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, checking
on the birds at the impressive hotel garden. We gather at dinner for a 45 minute audiovisual introduction to the program.
Day 2: We meet for an early walk through the gardens of the hotel. During breakfast, we will enjoy an audiovisual presentation of the Birds of the Caribbean
by Richard Garrigues, author of the Field Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica, (to be published in 2006).
We get on the road and less than two hours later you will be admiring at least 14 different types of Hummingbirds. After this stop, we continue on our way to Sarapiqui, for our first 2 nts/3 days of Birding in the Caribbean
Lowlands.
The first night in Sarapiqui we will take a unique White Bat tour in a forest reserve that operates under the auspices of the Milwaukee Public Museum.
Day 3: We spend the entire day at La Selva station, property of the Organization for Tropical Studies, and one of the hottest spots for Birding in the
Caribbean Lowlands.
In the afternoon we will walk easy trails and visit a Butterfly Garden.
Day 4: We depart right after breakfast to board our boat to the Tortuguero Canals in the lower Caribbean. In the late afternoon we will take a private
boat for your first private encounter with water birds.
Day 5: We meet for a 5:00 call at the gardens of our lodge and then board out private boat for a tour of the canals and the national park. We will enjoy
lunch at the lodge and then board our boat again in the afternoon.
Day 6: We depart Tortuguero after breakfast and head further South to the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Park. We check in our hotel and walk the trails
nearby.
Day 7-8: After birding in the early morning hours, we have breakfast and then head towards the Talamanca region to see the migrating hawks, a very unique
opportunity to see these magnificent birds in a transitional stage.
Day 9: We go out in the morning before breakfast for a last session. We get on our way towards our Central Valley hotel. Lunch along the way and Farewell
dinner at the hotel.
Day 10: depart to the airport.
