Travel Services / 13-day all country Birding program

Introduction: this program has been designed as an introductory course in all species of Costa Rican Birds. In the 11 full days of Birding, you will see Water Birds, Caribbean Birds, Highland Birds, Lowland Birds, Central Valley Birds. This is a great mix for the first time visitor to Costa Rica or an experienced birder who wants to have the opportunity to see so much in such a small country, and at a great pace.

This trip is a great option for the mid to advanced Bird Watcher.

12 night / 13 day itinerary -- US$1,992 per person

Day 1: arrival to Costa Rica, check in at hotel Bougainvillea in the northeastern edge of the Central Valley. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, checking on the birds at the impressive hotel garden.. We gather at dinner for a 45 minute audiovisual introduction to the program.

Day 2: We meet for an early walk through the gardens of the hotel. During breakfast, we will enjoy an audiovisual presentation by Richard Garrigues, author of the Field Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica, (to be published in 2006).

We get on the road and less than two hours later you will be admiring at least 14 different types of Hummingbirds. After this stop, we continue on our way to Sarapiqui, for our first 2 nts/3 days of Birding in the Caribbean Lowlands.

The first night in Sarapiqui we will take a unique White Bat tour in a forest reserve that operates under the auspices of the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Day 3: We spend the entire day at La Selva station, property of the Organization for Tropical Studies, and one of the hottest spots for Birding in the Caribbean Lowlands.

Day 5: We depart early to board our boat in Caño Negro. This legendary destination will be your Water Bird destination.

Day 6: Today, we head towards the highlands of Monteverde. We arrive by lunch and check in our Mountain Lodge. A buttefly garden will be our next stop in the afternoon.

Day 7: The legendary Monteverde will be our focus today.

Day 8: We depart early towards the Central Pacific, home of the Scarlet Macaw and site of a great water bird excursion.

Day 9: We board our boat in the early morning hours to beat the traffic in the river. We will enjoy a delicious fresh fruit breakfast and wait for the Macaws to start flying above us.

Later in the day, we head towards the Carara National Park, home of the Macaws.

Day 10: We leave the Central Pacific towards the South Pacific and then the Southern Highlands. Birding along the route is simply marvelous. We will visit a wonderful Hummingbird research project.
